How to get ChatGPT Plus cheaper: the official routes

OpenAI offers five official routes: the Go plan, promotions, education plans, the Business plan and the free tier. All but Business lower the price per person.

1. Switch to ChatGPT Go if you mostly chat

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month in the US and €7.99 on the French App Store, less than half the price of Plus. OpenAI's pricing page says Go gives more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation and longer memory than Free. It also says Go may include ads.

Plus adds advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, custom GPTs and more Codex use. Go suits you if you write product descriptions, emails and customer replies. Skip it if you rely on deep research or long files.

Plus's feature list mentions image creation but no video generation. To make ad videos, see our guide to AI video generators for ads.

2. Use official ChatGPT Plus discounts and promotions

OpenAI runs Plus promotions from time to time, such as discount or trial codes from partners like mobile carriers, and referral invites from subscribers. Some offers are only for people who never had Plus. When the offer ends, the plan renews at the standard price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before.

OpenAI's rules say promo codes may not be sold or transferred, and OpenAI can cancel a code it suspects of misuse, so a code bought from a stranger can stop working.

Some users report a 50% offer for three months when they start cancelling Plus on the web. OpenAI does not document it, so count it as a bonus if it shows up.

3. Students and teachers: the 2026 offer is closed

OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gave eligible US college students four free months of Plus. Claims closed on 31 October 2026, according to third-party trackers, and there is no permanent student price.

Two official routes remain. ChatGPT Edu is sold to universities, so ask your school. Verified US K-12 educators get ChatGPT for Teachers at no cost through June 2027, per OpenAI's pricing page.

4. ChatGPT Business for two people or more

ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually, with a minimum of two seats. A yearly seat costs the same as Plus, so only nonprofits save money: OpenAI gives them up to 75% off. For a small store, Business gives each person their own login in one workspace with admin controls.

5. Stay on the free plan

ChatGPT Free costs nothing. OpenAI's pricing page puts no cap on plain text chats, but limits uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory. If you write a few product descriptions a week, Free may be enough. Upgrade when you hit a limit.

Cheaper ChatGPT Plus alternatives and bundles

Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity all have a free plan, and Google's cheapest paid plan costs $4.99 a month.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?

Go costs $8 a month in the US and Plus $20. Go gives more messages with tools, uploads, image creation and memory than Free, and OpenAI says it may include ads. Plus adds advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, custom GPTs and more Codex use. Start with Go and upgrade when you hit a limit.

Yes, through a bundle. Multi-model chat apps such as Mammouth AI start at €10 a month and give you the models in their own interface. SpyBox includes ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity in a desktop app with 35 tools in total, for €29.99 a month or €249.99 a year.
